The Kurayoshi Shirakabe Dozo-gun is a beautifully preserved district of traditional buildings and storehouses located in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture. Lined along the Tamagawa River, this townscape offers a nostalgic glimpse into Japan’s merchant past.
Originally, Kurayoshi developed as a castle town during the Muromachi period (1336–1573), and the area prospered through the Edo and Meiji periods. During this period, samurai residences were built around a jinya, and many of the district’s iconic white-walled storehouses were also constructed.
The storehouses feature brilliant white plaster walls set above a covering made of black, charred cedar boards, a technique used to improve fire resistance. These structures are crowned with distinctive red Sekishu tiles from Shimane Prefecture, which are fired at over 1200°C to make them exceptionally resistant to cold-weather damage.
Today, the historic storehouses have been repurposed into a variety of modern establishments, including cafes, souvenir shops, galleries, and workshops. Visitors can stroll through the nostalgic streets and participate in hands-on craft experiences like Hakota doll painting.
