Rising atop Kameyama Hill in Kagawa Prefecture, Marugame Castle is famed for its four-tiered stone walls—the tallest in Japan—gracefully curving toward the wooden keep. Constructed in 1597 by the Ikoma clan, the castle was later rebuilt by the Yamazaki clan in 1643, after the Ikoma were forced to abandon it, and was completed during the subsequent Kyogoku clan’s reign. The stone walls are particularly noteworthy, constructed with a variety of sophisticated techniques, and much of the original stonework remains preserved to this day. Standing before these high walls, built without the use of any mortar, you can appreciate the advanced skill of the craftsmen and imagine their dedication. Exploring the walls while reflecting on their history is one of the great pleasures of visiting. The castle’s master Edo era stonework has earned it a reputation as a masterpiece in stone castle walls.
The compact yet elegant keep—one of only twelve original Edo period castle keeps still standing—has been designated an Important Cultural Property. Visitors entering through the Ote Ichino Gate (Taiko Gate) are still welcomed by the “time drum,” struck daily at noon just as it was in samurai days.
In spring, cherry trees fill the grounds with blossoms, and at night, lanterns are lit, allowing visitors to enjoy nighttime cherry blossom viewing. If you really want a special experience, overnight stays are occasionally offered as part of special programs, allowing guests to have an exclusive stay in the castle keep.
