The Tokyo Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum, located in the Ryōgoku district of Sumida-ku, Tokyo, chronicles approximately 400 years of the city’s history and culture. Opened in March 1993, its mission is to preserve the heritage of Edo, the city founded by TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, and trace its evolution into modern-day Tokyo.
The Edo-Tokyo Museum allows you to experience the charm of Edo, which was the governmental and cultural hub throughout the Edo period. Not only can you learn about the city’s history, but you can also explore the daily lives and spirits of its residents. Understanding the features of Edo and its residents through the displays allows you to experience the mercantile culture that laid the groundwork for vibrant art forms such as ukiyo-e and kabuki.
Designed by architect KIKUTAKE Kiyonori, the museum’s building is a unique and unmissable landmark in its own right. Nearby, you can also experience facilities that preserve culture passed down from the Edo period, such as the Ryōgoku Kokugikan, which hosts sumo matches during designated months. We highly recommend visiting these spots together.
*Please note, the museum is currently closed for major facility renovations and is scheduled to reopen March 31, 2026.
