Located on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, Hikone Castle is one of Japan’s most beautifully preserved castles and a rare survivor from the Edo period. Construction began in 1604 under the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who rewarded his loyal retainers in the Ii clan with this strategic stronghold. Completed in 1622, the castle served as the clan’s seat of power for more than 250 years.
The castle’s three-story main keep, completed in 1606, remains intact, making it one of only twelve original keeps left in Japan. Together with its turrets, moats, and stone walls, Hikone Castle is an incredible example of Edo period castle architecture and defense. Its main keep is celebrated as a National Treasure, while the surrounding grounds are designated a Special Historic Site.
Visitors can climb up inside the keep for sweeping views of Lake Biwa and the town below, stroll through the serene Genkyu-en Garden and enjoy a cup of tea, or visit the on-site Hikone Castle Museum, which houses arms, armor, and treasures of the Ii family. Seasonal highlights include spring cherry blossoms blooming around the moats, and autumn foliage. The castle is also known for appearances by Hikonyan, the city’s beloved samurai-cat mascot, which delight both children and adults. Easily accessible from JR Hikone Station, the castle is a must-see if you’re looking for an authentic encounter with Japan’s Edo era heritage.
