Menuma Shodenzan, founded in 1179, is a historic temple counted as one of Japan’s three major Shōten temples.” In particular, its main hall, the Kangiin Shōden-dō, is highly acclaimed as a magnificent example of decorative mid-Edo period architecture and is designated as a National Treasure. Since ancient times, many people have visited to wish for things like finding a partner and ensuring family safety, and this tradition of faith and culture has been carefully passed down to the present day.
The temple’s main hall, completed in 1779, is a masterpiece of the Gongen-zukuri architectural style, combining multiple structures into one cohesive design. The style is inspired by that of the famous Nikko Toshogu Shrine. At Menuma Shodenzan, the inner hall features the distinctive irimoya-zukuri architecture (a roof shape with a gable roof on top and a hipped roof below), and every wall and beam is richly adorned with intricate carvings and vivid colors. Crafted by local master carpenters descended from artisans of the Edo shogunate, this hall is now designated a National Treasure, a fine example of Edo-period craftsmanship at its peak.
You can also explore the temple grounds and approach, where traditional Edo style shoden-zushi (also known as Menuma inari sushi today) is served, for a taste of some local culinary heritage alongside the visual splendor.
