Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori Kaikan is located in Arimatsu, a historic town in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The town was established in 1608 during the early Edo period as a settlement along the Tokaido road. The town’s residents developed shibori (wringing) as a local industry to combat a lack of farmland. Arimatsu Shibori, invented by the artisan Takeda Shokuro, gained immense popularity among travelers and was promoted and protected by the Owari Domain as a special product of the domain. Its prosperity was famously captured in ukiyo-e prints by masters like Hokusai and Hiroshige.
The townscape today is distinguished by magnificent townhouses. Arimatsu is also home to three ornate festival floats (dashi)—the Hoteisha, Karakosha, and Jingū Kōgōsha. The Arimatsu Tenmansha Autumn Festival (Arimatsu Float Festival), where these floats are paraded through the streets, is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Nagoya City.
Designated as Nagoya’s first townscape preservation area, Arimatsu offers a vivid glimpse into the past. Visitors can explore the Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori Kaikan to see craft demonstrations, purchase authentic goods, or even participate in a hands-on dyeing workshop (reservations required). The town’s three floats are the centerpiece of the Arimatsu Tenmansha Autumn Festival (Arimatsu Float Festival) each October, but one is always on display at the Arimatsu Dashi Kaikan for viewing on the weekend.
