Key Points

  • The setting for one of Hokusai’s famous ukiyo-e woodblock prints from Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji

  • A breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi

  • A historic route connecting Kofu Basin and the base of Mt. Fuji

Misaka Pass, straddling the border between Fujikawaguchiko Town and Fuefuki City in Yamanashi Prefecture, is more than just a scenic mountain road: it’s also been immortalized in ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. One of the series’ most enigmatic works, “Koshu Misaka Suimen” (“The Surface of the Water at Misaka”), captures the striking image of Mount Fuji reflected upside-down in calm lake waters – an effect known as Sakasa Fuji (inverted Fuji).
Though the actual view of inverted Fuji typically requires reaching the shore of Lake Kawaguchi, Hokusai’s composition blends both the elevated panoramic view from the pass and the emotional impact of descending to the lakeside to witness the reflection. From Misaka Pass, reachable by car or bus, visitors can catch the real-life view that inspired the Edo period artist, with a breathtaking vista of Mt. Fuji.
