Key Points

  • Contains some 30,000 heirlooms of the Mito Tokugawa family

  • Features personal belongings of first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, weapons, and armor

  • Most extensive single facility displaying largest collection of daimyo-related items in the country

Opened in 1977, the Tokugawa Museum preserves the treasures of the Mito branch of the Tokugawa family, one of the three most influential clans of the Edo period, the Gosanke. Its collection centers on heirlooms passed down for generations, including belongings of Tokugawa Ieyasu himself, the founding shogun of the Edo shogunate; as well as weapons, armor, and household items once used by the lords of Mito.

A highlight is the display of Dai Nihonshi manuscripts, an ambitious historical work begun in the 17th century by Tokugawa Mitsukuni (lord of the Mito domain). Visitors can also see rare documents and artifacts that reveal both the political and cultural life of the Mito Tokugawa family, a powerful samurai family. Outside its exhibitions, the museum grounds also feature a tea house and a modern café.

As the only museum in Japan dedicated to the Mito Tokugawa family, the Tokugawa Museum offers a unique chance to view the many treasures and artifacts associated with this leading daimyo family in one place.
